Prioritizing Patient Safety: Benji's Journey at Lacor Hospital

SEPTEMBER 18, 2022

WORLD PATIENT SAFETY DAY

In honor of Patient Safety Day, I want to share a story that highlights the extraordinary dedication and care provided by the staff at Lacor Hospital. At Lacor, the well-being and safety of patients are not just priorities; they are the essence of the hospital's mission. Today, I bring you the remarkable story of Benji, a fifteen-year-old boy from the village of Apaa, whose life was transformed through the compassionate care he received at Lacor Hospital.

A Rough Start

Benji's life began with adversity, as he was separated from his parents at just one year old due to financial constraints within the family. Raised by his maternal grandmother in the poverty-stricken village of Apaa, Benji faced unimaginable challenges from a very young age.

At the age of three, Benji's world was further disrupted when he fell seriously ill. The road to a diagnosis was uncertain, leading his family on a journey through various private clinics near their village. It wasn't until they reached one of Lacor Hospital's health centers that they finally received a definitive diagnosis: Benji had type 1 diabetes.

Understanding Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes is a chronic condition in which the body's immune system attacks and destroys the cells in the pancreas responsible for producing insulin. This hormone regulates blood sugar levels. This condition can occur at any age, even in infants. Managing type 1 diabetes requires daily insulin injections for life.

Doctor Martha Gimono, who oversees children at the Lacor Children's Diabetes Clinic, emphasizes the importance of lifelong management: "Those with this disease can live well and for a long time, as long as they manage it with daily insulin injections."

A Lifesaving Encounter at Lacor

Following his diagnosis, Benji was admitted to Lacor Hospital for treatment. He was discharged with a month's supply of insulin. A week later, however, he was found near the hospital's pediatric ward. Philippa, a nurse in the medical department, recognized Benji immediately. His blood sugar levels had skyrocketed, requiring immediate transfer to the intensive care unit.

Managing type 1 diabetes goes beyond insulin; it involves maintaining regular meal schedules, a significant challenge for Benji and his grandmother. Benji constantly felt hungry, a common symptom of the condition. Philippa recalls the complexity of the situation: "It was really difficult for us to see him in that state, but we were afraid to give him the insulin dose because we didn't know where and when he would find food." In diabetes management, insulin, and meals must go hand in hand.

Support from Generous Donors

At Lacor Hospital, the well-being of patients like Benji is supported by generous donors. Thanks to these contributions, Benji received free treatment and a meal card for the Hospital canteen. He no longer has to worry about finding food to help manage his condition.

Philippa played a pivotal role in Benji's journey, teaching him how to administer insulin with an insulin pen. The medical department staff also took turns caring for him. "He's very smart; he has learned to give himself insulin doses and has a great desire to live."

Challenges Remain, but Hope Prevails

While many challenges are still associated with managing type 1 diabetes in impoverished environments, Lacor Hospital remains a place of comfort and support. The Hospital ensures a steady supply of insulin and all necessary tools for monitoring glucose levels. The pediatric diabetes clinic conducts home visits to ensure that treatment plans are followed and to raise awareness among family members about the condition.

Continue Prioritizing Patient Safety

Benji's journey at Lacor Hospital is a testament to the unwavering commitment of the hospital staff to prioritize patient safety and well-being. The hospital's efforts to provide comprehensive care, coupled with the support of generous donors, transformed the life of a young boy.

As we celebrate Patient Safety Day, let Benji's story remind us of the remarkable impact compassionate healthcare can have on individuals and communities in need. Your continued support is essential in making such life-changing stories possible. Together, we can ensure that patient safety remains at the heart of Lacor Hospital's mission.
