Irene Amalaraj is a research technician at Indiana University School of Medicine, where she investigates the mechanisms behind intrinsic beta-cell dysfunction in the development of type 1 diabetes. As an aspiring physician-scientist, she is dedicated to finding new ways to treat and diagnose diabetes and metabolic diseases. She will begin her MD/PhD training in the summer of 2026.
Irene graduated summa cum laude from DePauw University with a B.A. in Biochemistry and Philosophy. During her time there, she founded a DePauw branch of Social Promise, raising over $1,500 to support the school lunch program at St. Jude. In 2024, she joined the Board of Social Promise, where she continues to advocate for and support the patients and community members that the organization serves.
